I have just come across this initiative of the International Labour Organisation to end slavery and raise awareness on the phenomenon of forced labour. It’s called ArtWorks and it brings together the ILO, artists and athletes committed to promoting fundamental rights in the world of work. The website also contains beautiful photos from the ILO book “Retrato Escravo” (“Slave portrait”) by João Roberto Ripper and Sergio Carvalho, which recently won the Best Photography Book at the 2013 Pictures of the Year Latin America Awards (POY LATAM). It shows contemporary slavery in Brazil and reveals the poor working and living conditions of many women, men and children.
This is a great initiative for one of the most widespread human rights violations in the world. There are currently 21 million women, men and children in slavery. 4.5 million are victims of forced sexual exploitation.
